SREEKUTTY could not have asked for more. The 11-year-old’s little poem, ‘Ammathan Pookalam’, is now being read by bloggers across the world and not just confined to the classroom of her little school at Kottayam.
The blog, www.ghsmanjoor.blogspot.com, has turned a boon to many creative students like Sreekutty in her school, the Government High School Manjoor, who can now showcase their talents to a large world outside. A real model of how a school blog ought to be.
Log in and you find the blog updated meticulously, with all minute and micro details, favourite to the students posted here. The medical camp held in the school, the school activity calendar, seminar on road safety for students, digital painting competition, online quiz competition, activities of the school’s space club...the menu is just admirable.
This is apart from the collection of poems, short stories and paintings by students posted, right from class I to class X. There are links to SSA, IT@School and Education Department given in the blog so that students can browse for information. Only a year old in the blogosphere, this school blog has dozens of followers too.
No wonder Sreekutty’s little poem was appreciated by many and even fondly corrected by a senior Malayalam blogger, much to the excitement of the whole school. The blog enjoys whole-hearted support of all teachers and that of Headmaster A.M. Baby.
“There was a scheme of the Education Department under which there was provision to launch an innovative scheme in school. Initially, we thought of starting a magazine, but then our’s is a small school and we didn’t have the fund or enough readers for such a magazine. So, we decided on an online magazine and the idea of a school blog was finalised,’’ said Nidhin Jose, a primary teacher in the school, who also designed the blog page.
A writing and reading competition was then held in the school and the best of the students’ creative outputs were compiled to start the blog. Besides, an orientation class was also given to teachers and students on blogs and blogging.
The IT lab is where the whole activity is centred. The school’s IT period is now used by students to peruse their blog and to come up with suggestions.
There is a teachers’ editorial panel and a students’ panel too, who decide on the content to be posted in the blog.
“We now have an idea to start a ‘science corner’ in our blog. Since this is the Year of Science, and there are many science-related activities happening in the school, we plan to share it through our blog,’’ said Radhakrishnan K.C., Malayalam teacher in the school. The blog team also has plans to document their science activities and post the visuals in the school blog.
